While Graham Potter remains unbeaten in nine matches since swapping the Amex Stadium for Stamford Bridge in September, there remains a sense that the Blues have yet to really catch fire under their new manager.

However, Potter’s win percentage of 66.7% remains highly impressive, while the former Osterlunds coach also showcased his tactical dexterity in the recent 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

In the ongoing quest to strike the ideal balance between defence and attack, however, Potter may have to delve into the transfer market this winter. But could he raid his former club Brighton, and if so, for who?

#1. Leandro Trossard

On the subject of tactical flexibility, it’s well known that Potter likes versatile and intelligent footballers who can play in multiple positions.

He also likes to deploy inverted midfielders and wingers in advanced wingback positions, with Christian Pulisic (right) and Raheem Sterling (left) filling these roles in the recent 2-1 win at RB Salzburg.

This makes Belgian Leandro Trossard a key target for Potter, with the technically adroit 27-year-old having played with distinction both as left wingback and just behind a central strike during his time at Brighton.

Trossard would certainly add quality and depth to the Chelsea squad, while he’d make an excellent acquisition this winter.

#2. Tariq Lamptey

While Tariq Lamptey’s fire may have been somewhat quelled this season following injury and a significant reduction of game time, he remains one of the most exciting and attack-oriented wingbacks in England.

What’s more, he’s a former Chelsea academy graduate, who joined Brighton in January 2020 after being released by the Blues.

It’s clear that Lamptey would be open to joining Chelsea potentially as soon as this winter, while this would provide the Blues with some much-needed depth behind Reece James and create further tactical flexibility in the playing squad.

#3. Moises Caicedo

Another player on this list could well be the combative and dynamic midfielder Moises Caicedo, who has done a sterling job for Brighton and offers a noticeable eye for goal.

Of course, the Blues are well-stocked with central midfielders, although Connor Gallagher has yet to cement his starting place and N’Golo Kante continues to struggle with seemingly endless injuries.

At the same time, Caicedo brings the type of dynamism and physicality that Potter demands from his midfielders, with only Mateo Kovačić arguably offering a similar profile in the current Chelsea squad.
