Who is Ben Chilwell?

Benjamin James Chilwell, simply known as Ben Chilwell, is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Chelsea. Ben was born on 21 December 1996 in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Chilwell joined Leicester City’s academy in 2009 when he was 12-year-old, having played in Rushden & Diamonds’ centre of excellence.

England international won their Academy Player of the Year award at the end of the 2014–15 campaign.

After featuring the Foxes in pre-season under new coach Claudio Ranieri, the English defender was given the No.30 shirt ahead of the 2015–16 campaign.

Chilwell made his first-team debut on 27 October 2015 in the League Cup game with Hull City.

Ben played the full match as Foxes lost 5–4 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time.

On 19 November 2015, Ben joined Championship team Huddersfield Town on a youth loan until 3 January 2016. On 28 July 2016, Ben signed a new deal with the Foxes until June 2021.

The 24-year-old defender made his Premier League debut on 26 December in a 2–0 home defeat to Everton. Ben received praise for his display.

Chilwell played 19 games across the 2016–17 campaign, including two in the UEFA Champions League, and scored his first career goal on 18 May 2017 in a 6–1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Chilwell signed a long-term contract with the Foxes on 20 October, tying him until June 2024. Ben signed for Leicester City’s Premier League rivals Chelsea on 26 August 2020 on a five-year deal for £45m.

On 7 April 2021, the English left-back scored his first UEFA Champions League goal in a 2–0 away victory over Porto in the first match of the quarter-final tie.

On 29 May, Ben won his first-ever title after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 1–0 in the 2021 UEFA Champions League Final in Porto.

What is Ben Chilwell’s international career like?

The 24-year-old defender was called up from the U21 team to the entire Three Lions squad in September 2018 for a friendly game with Switzerland.

In this game on 11 September, Chilwell made his debut as a 79th-minute replacement for Danny Rose in a 1–0 home victory.

Ben started on 12 October in a goalless draw with Croatia in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League A.

Ben was named in the 26-man Three Lions squad for UEFA Euro 2020. England lost the UEFA Euro 2020 final against Italy in a penalty shoot-out.
