Who is César Azpilicueta?
César Azpilicueta Tanco, simply known as Azpilicueta, is a Spanish player who plays as a defender for Premier League giants Chelsea.
Spain international is a captain of the Blues and won several trophies with the London club including, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, English FA Cup and two Premier League. César was born on 28 August 1989 in Pamplona, Spain.
Azpilicueta played nearly 400 games for the London club. The Spanish defender is a product of Osasuna youth academy and spent three seasons in La Liga before switching to Ligue 1 club Marseille.
In summer 2010, the Olympians confirmed a deal had been reached with the Spanish club for the transfer of Cesar, in a four-year deal for €7m.
On 27 November 2010, in the early minutes of a 4–0 home victory with Montpellier, Azpilicueta ruptured the anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee.
The Spanish right-back was sidelined for six months. On 13 May 2012, Cesar scored his first and only Ligue 1 goal for the French club in a 3–0 victory over Auxerre.
In summer 2012, Chelsea completed the signing of the Spaniard for a £7m fee. Azpilicueta made his debut on 25 September 2012, starting in a 6–0 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge in a League Cup tie.
In his first year, Cesar played 48 matches for the Blues, including eight in Chelsea’s victorious season in the UEFA Europa League.
The Spanish right-back scored his first goal for the London club on 29 October 2013, netting the first in a 2–0 win against Arsenal.
In the José Mourinho period, Azpilicueta began appearing regularly as a left-back, taking the place of Ashley Cole.
At the end of the campaign, Cesar was voted Chelsea’s Players’ Player of the Year. On 2 September 2014, the 31-year-old defender signed a new five-year deal with the Blues.
Cesar signed a new deal in December 2018, lasting to 2022. After Gary Cahill left the London club, Azpilicueta was named Chelsea captain ahead of the 2019–20 campaign.

In winter 2013, Cesar was named to the Spain national team for the upcoming international friendly game with Uruguay. Azpilicueta made his debut five days later, playing the whole game in the 3–1 victory in Doha, Qatar.
On 28 June 2021, the 31-year-old defender scored his first senior international goal in the EURO 2020 Round of 16 game with Croatia on a header to take the lead 2–1.
