Who is Edouard Mendy?
Édouard Mendy was born 1 March 1992 is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Chelsea and the Senegal national team.
Mendy was born in Montivilliers (Seine-Maritime, Normandy) in France. He is a cousin of Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy.
Starting his career in France Mendy played in the Le Havre academy before making a move to Cherbourg in 2011. He was released in 2014, after which he almost left the game before getting an opportunity with Marseille’s reserves team. He established himself over the next few campaigns at Rennes and Reims before signing with Chelsea in 2020, where he immediately established as a starter replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga and kept 16 clean sheets in his first Premier League campaigns. In 2021/22 he was an integral part of Chelsea that beat Manchester City 1–0 in the UEFA Champions League final.
Eligible to play for France and Senegal, Mendy initially joined up with Guinea Bissau in honour of his father. However, he subsequently moved allegiance to Senegal, where he became the first-choice stopper for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
