Who is Olivier Giroud?
Olivier Jonathan Giroud, commonly known as Olivier Giroud, is a French centre-forward who plays for Premier League giants Chelsea. France international was born on 30 September 1986 in Chambery.
Olivier is often considered one of the most underrated centre-forwards in the world. Olivier began his football career playing for his hometown team, Olympique Club de Frogs.
The French striker spent six years training at the team before joining Grenoble’s professional club at the age of 13.
Olivier spent five years developing in Grenoble’s youth academy before signing his first professional deal at the age of 21.
The French centre-forward quickly became an essential figure in the reserve team scoring 15 goals in 15 games.
Olivier was permanently promoted to the senior team for the 2006–07 campaign by new coach Payton Pouliquen.
On 26 February 2007, Olivier scored his first professional goal, netting the injury-time winner with Le Havre.
On 28 May 2008, it was reported that the French centre-forward had agreed to a three-year contract with Ligue 2 side Tours.
Olivier officially joined Montpellier in the summer of 2010. On 26 June 2012, Arsenal won the battle to sign Olivier on a long-term deal for a fee believed to be nearly £9.6m.
The French striker finished the 2012-13 campaign with 17 goals and 11 assists in 47 games.
On 17 May, Olivier started in the 2014 FA Cup Final as the Gunners beat Hull City 3–2 at Wembley Stadium and assisted Aaron Ramsey’s title-winning goal.
The Frenchman started the campaign by scoring the third goal in Gunners 3–0 victory over Man City in the 2014 FA Community Shield.
On 30 September 2014, Olivier signed a new deal at the Emirates Stadium, keeping him at Arsenal until 2018 and increasing his weekly wage to £80,000.
On 30 May, the French striker scored Arsenal’s fourth goal after appearing as a substitute in the Gunners’ 4–0 2015 FA Cup Final win against Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.
His goal against Crystal Palace earned him the FIFA Puskás Award for the goal of the year. On 31 January 2018, Olivier joined Chelsea.
The French centre-forward also helped the Blues to win the UEFA Champions League.
What is Olivier Giroud’s international career like?
On 3 November 2011, to reward Olivier for his displays domestically with Montpellier, Les Bleus manager Laurent Blanc named the centre-forward in the team to play in friendly games with the United States and Belgium.
Giroud helped France to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
