Who is Thiago Silva?

Thiago Silva was born on 22 September 1984 in Brazil, he currently plays as a centre back for Chelsea and is the captain of the Brazil national team.

Brazilian centre-back who has been known for his aerial ability and leadership skills, has been considered as one of the best of his generation. He began his football career in 2002 playing for RS Futebol as a midfielder and transitioned to a defensive position at Juventude; he then signed with Portuguese giants, Porto in 2004. In 2009, Silva signed for another top European team, AC Milan, for a reported fee of €8 million and claimed the Serie A title in the same year.

In 2012, Brazilian defender signed for Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in a transfer worth up to €42 million, becoming the most expensive centre-back ever at the time. There, he won seven Ligue 1 trophies, six Coupes de la Ligue and five Coupes de France.

Last season Silva made a move to Chelsea and helped Thomas Tuchel’s side to claim the 2020/21 Champions League title.

What are the plans for Thiago Silva next season?

After winning the Champions League title with Chelsea, Thiago Silva has been rumoured with a return to his former club Fluminense FC. However, recent reports from British newspapers claimed that the former PSG defender is keen on playing at the top level and considers signing a new contract with Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The 36-year-old centre-back, despite his age, has been one of the best in his position, and the German boss is keen on keeping him at Stamford Bridge for the 2021/22  season; Silva has formed one of the best defensive partnerships with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in the Premier League.

How did Thiago Silva’s career almost end at the age of 19?

Silva initially made a move to Europe in 2004 when he joined Champions League defending champions Porto from Juventude. He was loaned to Russian giants, Dynamo Moscow a year later; however, he never played a game for them after suffering chest pain and being diagnosed with tuberculosis. He subsequently spent around five months in hospital. Doctors even considered removing part of his lungs during the lengthy illness, which would have ended his football career; however, due to his strong character, he became one of the best defenders in the world.
