Thomas Tuchel

Who is Thomas Tuchel?

Thomas Tuchel is a Chelsea manager born on 29 August 1973 and a former player.

Born in Krumbach, Tuchel started his football career, however, he ended it too early at the age of 25, following a chronic knee cartilage injury.

In 2000, he began his coaching career, working for the VfB Stuttgart youth team for five years. In 2009, following a successful one-year period at FC Augsburg second team, he was hired by the Bundesliga team Mainz 05.

Tuchel led Mainz to league stability during his five campaigns at the team and gained respect for his attacking football. He also earned a reputation for his focus on giving youth players a chance to impress. He departed Mainz in 2014 and his next job was at Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal before being axed in 2017.

Then He was hired by Ligue 1 giant’s Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, where he won two league trophies, including a domestic quadruple in his second campaign, and guided the team to its first UEFA Champions League final. However, Tuchel was axed in 2020 and was then appointed as Frank Lampard’s successor at Chelsea in 2021, where he led the team to the Champions League trophy beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final.

Tuchel started his football career as a member of TSV Krumbach, coached by his father, Rudolf. He moved to the academy at FC Augsburg in 1988. However, he failed to make a single first-team appearance for the club, being released soon after he turned 19. After he was released from the club, Tuchel was quickly granted the opportunity to play in the second tier of German football league 2. Bundesliga for Stuttgarter Kickers back in 1992.

He played eight games during the 1992–93 campaign. After the 1993–94 season, he was dropped from Kickers’ starting XI, and joined Regionalliga Süd side, SSV Ulm, Playing as a centre-back, Tuchel played 69 games for SSV Ulm until being forced to retire in 1999, at age 25, after suffering a serious knee injury

Why Chelsea extended Thomas Tuchel contract?

Tuchel signed a contract extension with Chelsea keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2024 after leading the team to their European glory last season. The Blues chiefs have belief in the German manager to repeat the last season’s success and rewarded him with a new long-term deal.
