Who is Timo Werner?

Timo Werner is a German professional footballer who plays as a centre-forward for Premier League giants Chelsea.

Germany international was born on 6 March 1996 in Stuttgart. Nicknamed “Turbo Timo”, Werner is known for his acceleration and pace.

Timo played for Steinhaldenfeld before joining Stuttgart’s academy in 2002. On his 18th birthday, the German centre-forward signed a professional deal until June 2018 with Stuttgart.

In summer 2016, the 25-year-old striker agreed to a four-year deal with RB Leipzig.

Werner finished his tenure at RB Leipzig with 95 goals to become the Red Bulls’ record goalscorer, overtaking Daniel Frahn.

In summer 2020, Timo agreed to sign for Chelsea, which activated his £48m release clause on a five-year deal.

Werner made his Premier League debut with the Blues on 14 September in a 3–1 victory over Brighton.

On 17 October, the German striker scored his first Premier League goal with a brace and assisted Kai Havertz for the third as Blues drew Southampton 3–3 at Stamford Bridge.

On 28 October, Werner scored his first Champions League goal for the Blues, a penalty with Krasnodar.

On 5 May, Timo scored the first goal in a 2–0 victory over Real Madrid to help Chelsea book a place in the Champions League final.

On 29 May, Werner won his first-ever Champions League after the Blues won 1–0 against Man City in the final at the Estádio do Dragão.

What is Timo Werner’s international career like?

Timo represented Germany at the youth level, playing for the U15, U16, U17, U19 and U21 teams, scoring 34 goals in 48 games.

The 25-year-old centre-forward was called up to the German senior team in 2017 by Joachim Löw for the friendly match with England and the 2018 World Cup qualification game with Azerbaijan.

On 17 May 2017, Timo was named in Germany’s team for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup held in Russia. In summer 2017, the German striker assisted Lars Stindl’s competition-winning goal in the Final with Chile.

With three goals and two assists, Timo was awarded the competition’s Golden Boot. In summer 2018, the 25-year-old centre-forward was included in Germany’s team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Werner featured in three group stage games but failed to score as Germany was eliminated at the first round for the first time since 1938.

On 19 May 2021, Timo was selected to the Germany squad for the UEFA Euro 2020. Germany lost 2-0 against England in the round of 16.
