What is Premier League?

Premier League is the most well-known football league and the most-viewed sports league in the world. It’s the highest level of the English Football League hierarchy.

20 clubs are part of the division, and they play a total of 38 games in home and away match format.

A format of promotion and relegation is also followed, and three teams get promoted to Premier League or relegated to the lower league, in this case, EFL Championship. The English Premier League campaign runs from August to May.

It began on February 20, 1992, after outfits in the first division decided to break away from the Football League, which was established in 1888, and take advantage of a profitable television rights deal on offer.

For example, in the 2013-14 season, BT Group and Sky Sports paid £1 billion for rights to broadcast all the games. In 2018, PL negotiated a massive $5.96 billion the United Kingdom television rights deal for three seasons.

BT Sports, Amazon, and Sky Sports pay a total of $1.98 billion per campaign while the foreign broadcasters fork out a combined $1.85 billion per season.

The PL is the most-watched sports league globally, with games being shown in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a possible TV audience of 4.7 billion. The average presence at the stadiums for the 2018-19 term was 38,181.

The matchday attendance was only second to the German top-flight, Bundesliga. However, the aggregated attendance in all matches over the season is the highest in any division at 14,508,981.

The division is ranked second in Europe in the UEFA coefficients of leagues, following Spain’s La Liga.

The league is viewed to be the only football league, which has 5-6 title contenders each term, making the league one of the most thrilling leagues to watch.
