Chelsea have allegedly set their sights on goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, with the 29-year-old English star a free agent after quitting Fulham.
According to the latest report by The Athletic, the Blues are in the hunt for a new third-choice shot-stopper in the summer transfer market following the departure of the Argentina international Willy Caballero. And one of the options under consideration at the club is Marcus Bettinelli.
He joined the Fulham academy as a 14-year-old back in 2006 before making swift progress in their youth sector and breaking into the senior team squad in 2010. However, after over 10 years and a half with the Cottagers, the 29-year-old star is now a free agent following the conclusion of his contract with the club.
Over the course of his time with the Cottagers, he made 120 appearances, keeping 31 clean sheets in the process. Last campaign, he was on loan at Middlesbrough, and the player appears to have impressed one of the heavyweights of the game enough to be mentioned with a summer move, with Thomas Tuchel‘s side showing an interest in him.
The Blues are in the market for a new third-choice goalie after the departure of the South American star, who is now a free agent. While UEFA Champions League holders do already have two quality stoppers in Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, the board are intent on having a third one in their squad.
Another player who has been heavily linked with the Blues is Wayne Hennessey, who is also a free agent after parting company with Crystal Palace this summer. However, the Welsh custodian is allegedly on his way to Burnley, which is why the London giants have now turned their attention towards Marcus.
The report doesn’t divulge a lot about how far the club have taken their interest in Marcus, which could suggest that it is only in the early stages as of now. Having said that, Chelsea do appear to be keen on landing a new third-choice goalkeeper, and it’ll be interesting to see if Bettinelli ends up becoming a serious target.
For now, he is seemingly one of the multiple options being considered by Chelsea to strengthen their goalkeeping department in the summer transfer market, and it remains to be seen if the side launch the offensive for the 29-year-old star anytime soon.
