Arsenal have reportedly identified Marcus Bettinelli as their summer transfer target. However, Chelsea thought to have won the race for his signature.

The Daily Mail claimed last week that North London giants had entered the race for the 29-year-old stopper as they are in the market for back-up options to Leno, while Chelsea want him as a replacement to Willy Caballero.

Arsenal and Chelsea are currently on the lookout for reinforcements ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Bernd Leno’s future at the Emirates Stadium has also been up in the air, while Alex Runarsson has failed to impress Mikel Arteta, the Spaniard has promoted Arthur Okonkwo to the first team; however, the Hale End graduate has no experience in the English top-tier.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea are on the verge to announce the signing of 6ft 4in a goalkeeper who played the last season at Fulham before becoming a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Bettinelli will join the West London club on a two-year deal later this week, claimed the report.

The ex-England Under-21 international is a free agent after departing from Fulham at the end of last campaign.

Bettinelli came through the ranks at Craven Cottage and has played 120 games for the team.

He played a vital role in Fulham making a promotion to the English top-tier in 2018.

Bettinelli’s efforts saw him rewarded to receive a call-up to the England national team in September 2018.

However, the player’s international aspirations suffered a dent after he fell down the pecking order at the club.

He spent the last term on loan at Middlesbrough, who missed out on the chance to make a promotion to the English top-tier and Now, The Guardian claims that Bettinelli will become a Chelsea player in the nearby future.

Chelsea tried to sign Euro 2020 winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma earlier last month, however, he has ended up signing for Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain after his deal expired at AC Milan.
