Chelsea in the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez during this summer transfer window. Man United and Liverpool are also keen to sign Spain internationals. The English clubs have contacted Saul’s agents, and a move could be in the offing.
The Spaniard has headed into the summer transfer window on the back of one of his terrible seasons at senior level to date. The 2020/21 campaign saw him gradually fall down the pecking order, with his predicament potentially worsening following the arrival of Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese.
To date, the Spanish midfielder has played 337 games for Los Colchoneros, chipping in with 43 goals and 19 assists. However, his fall in stature has also been reflected on the international level, as the 26-year-old midfielder has also lost his place in the Furia Roja squad.
However, in the transfer market, Niguez is still being chased by some of the biggest teams in Europe, with Chelsea and Liverpool interested. The interest from the Blues is interesting, as the German tactician does have three top-class midfielders at his disposal in Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.
However, Thomas Tuchel will still need another central midfielder in his team following Billy Gilmour’s loan move to Norwich City, according to a report. With last campaign’s loanees not in the German coach’s plans, it is clear that a midfielder would be needed at Chelsea.
On the other hand, the Merseyside giants have been hot on Niguez’s trails for quite some time now, having even submitted an offer to add the midfielder recently. There have been suggestions that Jordan Henderson could be included in the deal to sign the Spaniard, although Saul could arrive as a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.
For now, what appears to be likely is that the Spanish midfielder’s time at Wanda Metropolitano has seemingly reached its end, with Los Colchoneros open to cashing in on him as well.
What now stays to be seen is if the Blues or Reds can produce a sizable enough bid to convince Atletico Madrid to sell Niguez to them ahead of Man United.
According to Marca, the Red Devils are the likeliest destination for the Spaniard, although Chelsea and Liverpool are making their attempts to add the midfielder by contacting his agents.
But with the German manager behind the interest in the midfielder, Chelsea could attempt to seal a deal for the footballer. With La Liga giants signing Rodrigo de Paul this transfer window, Saul Niguez’s future is uncertain in Spain.
