Premier League clubs West Ham United and Everton are in the race for out-of-favour Chelsea playmaker Ross Barkley. England international signed for the Blues in the winter transfer window in 2017 but has never been able to nail down a place for himself at Chelsea.

While there have been glimpses of brilliance now and then, they have come few and far between, with Barkley largely underwhelming during his time as Chelsea’s footballer. Last summer, Ross left for Aston Villa on loan, beginning on a hopeful note before an injury struck him down.

Upon returning, the 27-year-old midfielder was well below the levels expected, which meant the Villans’ decided not to add the midfielder permanently. Back at the London club, the English midfielder has been told to find a new team for himself, given the plenty of available options at the club.

The English midfielder’s situation has prompted big interest from boyhood club, Everton, as per the report. The Merseyside club are ready to embark on a new journey under Spanish coach Rafael Benitez and will need to add quality to their team to challenge for the European spots.

Considering the doubts surrounding the future of James Rodriguez, the Toffees could use the services of another playmaker. Ross, thus, has emerged as the main transfer target. However, the Merseyside club will face competition from West Ham United for Barkley’s services.

David Moyes was the one who handed the Englishman his breakthrough back at Goodison Park and is keen on a reunion. The 27-year-old midfielder is viewed as an alternative to Jesse Lingard, who, according to Talksport, is increasingly looking likely to remain at the Old Trafford next term.

With Europa League football coming to West Ham United in the upcoming season, the Hammers will need to have adequate depth across the pitch to be able to rotate their footballers effectively.

Thus, strengthening the front-line with the signing of the 27-year-old midfielder may end up a smart move despite his injury history. Apart from the aforementioned two teams, according to Football.London, even Newcastle United are said to be interested in Ross.

As things stand, it seems like Barkley’s time at Chelsea is coming to an end. What stays to be seen is if the Hammers can beat the Toffees to his transfer or if they end up losing out to Rafael Benitez & co.
